Scleral Lens Clinic

Scleral contact lenses are a specialized type of lens designed for patients who struggle with traditional contact lenses or have specific ocular conditions that require more advanced solutions. These lenses are larger than conventional soft or rigid gas-permeable lenses and vault over the entire cornea, resting on the sclera (the white part of the eye). This unique design provides numerous benefits, including enhanced comfort, improved vision, and protection for the eye surface.

Scleral lenses are ideal for patients with conditions such as keratoconus, severe dry eye, corneal irregularities, or post-surgical complications. They can also be beneficial for those who have not found success with other types of contact lenses. However, not everyone is a candidate for scleral lenses. A thorough consultation is required to assess whether scleral lenses are the right solution for your needs. If you’ve been referred by a corneal specialist, please bring a referral note or clearance recommending scleral lenses to your consultation.

For new patients—whether you’ve worn scleral lenses before or not—the fitting process involves multiple visits to ensure the lenses are customized to your eyes. If you’ve never worn scleral lenses, training on insertion, removal, and proper care will be provided. Please dress comfortably and older clothing, as the process can sometimes get messy. If you're an existing scleral lens wearer, please supply the office with relevant notes from your prior doctor's office.

Insurance authorization is required before lenses can be dispensed. Since scleral lenses are custom-made, adjustments may be needed throughout the fitting process. Please note that once this process begins, refunds are not possible. In the event a scleral lens is lost during the fitting or evaluation process, a fee of $300 per lens, or $600 per pair, will apply. Annual re-evaluation and professional fees are also necessary to maintain proper lens function and eye health.
